Yoo-hyun Sung, Assistant Manager

How do you spend your day?

I'm in charge of sales and field management for our smart mining solution. Our team is busy managing real-time blasting site using our solution, addressing customer feedback (VOCs), and pursuing new client sales.

Each morning, I start my day by reviewing my to-do list on paper, which I prefer over digital methods because I can check and edit anytime. Next, I check emails received overnight and from overseas clients due to the time difference. Addressing a variety of VOCs, our team constantly communicate between clients and developers to devise solutions and adjust schedules. Our sales tasks include sales management, preparation, estimations, and monitoring competitors. When I work on site, I typically spend the entire day. Lately, we've been visiting open-pit blasting sites for large industrial complexes frequently. From the pre-blasting stage to operating smart mining solutions for charging, blasting, and analyzing results, we actively respond to VOCs and on-site feedback. Attentively considering each customer's voice is crucial for improving our solution. While working on-site can be challenging due to risks and harsh weather, the satisfaction of seeing our systems function effectively and achieving desired results is very rewarding.

Please introduce your team and the work you are in charge of.

Our team specializes in developing and marketing HATS, an advanced smart mining solution, for both domestic and international mines, stone quarries, and major civil engineering projects. HATS, which stands for 'Hanwha As a Total Solution,' is a comprehensive digital blasting system that covers the entire process from drilling and charging to measurement. Our solution offers cost savings, efficient data management, and enhanced safety. As we operate in a relatively uncharted field, our development process requires close collaboration between blasting technicians and IT developers to create both software and hardware components. As a member of the technical sales team, my primary responsibility is to market these innovative solutions and provide technical support to our customers.

When do you feel rewarded while at work? Tell me about the experience.

Our team has a unique task that sets our solution apart: installing precision sensors tailored to each piece of equipment on site. Despite meticulous planning, fieldwork often involves unpredictable and dangerous situations, requiring constant vigilance. I feel great satisfaction in responding effectively to emergencies, ensuring our solution operates flawlessly on-site. This often results in additional contracts from satisfied customers.

Did you ever feel like you improved because you are a part of the company/organization?

Our company, especially our IS division, is a explosives manufacturing company with the best technology and infrastructure in Korea. Hanwha is wherever there is blasting. I was able to talk to many executives and managers of leading civil engineering companies in Korea while working in technology sales, and as Hanwha seeks for the global market, I was able to visit various countries such as Australia, Saudi Arabia, and Indonesia which allowed me to gain experiences in product promotion and sales. Through these experiences, I felt good about myself for promoting Hanwha's state-of-the-art technology and I could see myself growing.

What are some things that boost you up in a busy company life?

I'm a newlywed. I just got married last week! When I was single, I used to go out for dinner with my colleagues after work. We would chat while having a beer, or do fun things together to let go of the stress from work. But now the fact that I have someone to talk to and eat with at home makes my life a lot more fulfilling.

Why did you choose Hanwha Global?

There was a time when I was really into fireworks. When I was serving the army as an auxiliary police officer, I was going through a difficult time, and the fireworks I unexpectedly encountered in Busan became a ray of light for me. I was majoring in the related field(Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering), and I was intrigued to learn more about explosives. I chose Hanwha Global because I wanted to grow with expertise in the key areas, like fireworks that bring happiness to many people, and explosives and chemical products that are essential for urban development.

Can you advise the future coworkers on what to study and what skills to develop to do this job?

Academically speaking, what we're doing is essentially blasting using explosives. It seems important to have basic knowledge about blasting. You can build some basic knowledge by studying for the explosives management engineer or the explosives manufacturing engineer qualification test. In addition, I think the ability to proactively adapt to rapid changes is also important because we need to understand the little-known field of "blasting" and explore new markets. It may seem like a difficult field, but I think keeping a positive attitude will really help you get through those difficult moments. There is a first time for everything!
