How do you spend your day?

I commute from Cheonan and take the first KTX train to work each morning. Arriving at Seoul Station, still not fully awake, I listen to upbeat music to energize myself. My workday begins with tidying my desk and checking my mailbox. Then, I enjoy a coffee break with my coworkers. My daily workload varies, largely depending on project schedules, but I usually start by going through my emails and reviewing technical data in the morning. At lunchtime, I like to do something enjoyable. I go bouldering for about an hour at a nearby indoor climbing center, have a quick lunch, and then return to work. In the afternoon, my tasks are more interactive, involving meetings and calls as scheduled earlier. Some days are filled with back-to-back meetings, while others involve reviewing Vendor Prints or studying new technology trends for the entire day. No two days are the same.

After work, I switch to my role as a mom, spending time playing with my 4-year-old child until bedtime. I often plan to watch some TV shows after my child falls asleep, but I usually end up falling asleep before they do.

Please introduce your team and the work you are in charge of.

I'm in charge of rotating machine design in the Mechanical Construction Design Team of the Plant Division, which is involved in various aspects of plant construction projects, from development and bidding to execution. In the project to increase nitric acid production capacity to 400,000 MT in Yeosu, our focus is on supporting rotating machines like pumps and compressors. These machines, being the heart of a plant and a culmination of advanced technologies, take up a significant portion of the project's initial investment. Our team carefully assesses the project owners' requirements to optimize machine specifications that align with their processes. Following this, we prepare a request for quotation (RFQ). During the quotation phase, we carry out a technical bid evaluation (TBE). Once an order is placed, we review the machine drawings and vendor prints. After the machines are produced, we conduct quality inspections, on-site installations, and testing. The Mechanical Design Team plays a pivotal role in ensuring that the heart of the plant functions effectively from the project's inception through to the testing stage.

When do you feel rewarded while at work? Tell me about the experience.

One little mistake in the design drawings can cause a big impact in such that it can result in construction delays and additional orders. So there is something called Lessons Learned and Best Practices, which is a set process to share a series of issues that occurred during the work, and to check them when creating deliverables to prevent them from happening again. It was very rewarding when I heard that a junior had checked the Lessons Learned which I wrote as an assistant manager and taken actions accordingly.

Explain about your team culture or the team atmosphere?

Due to the nature of a design team, there is not much change in team member. Most of the Machine Design team colleagues have been working for more than 10 years, and we have a strong bond. We laugh together and help one another through difficult times. Collaboration is crucial to our work, so the executive, team leader, and part manager are all putting in vast effort to improve the overall atmosphere of the design team. Recently, we held a Design Team Retreat, which was a good opportunity to enjoy various sports such as soccer, bowling, and tennis and to get to know each other having dinner together. We don't have people with condescending attitude and people don't talk about the "back in the days'' stories. Our team is considerate of others and we recognize each other's efforts.

Compare yourself to who you pictured before joining the company(what is the same and how is it different).

I dreamed of becoming a professional who leads a meeting wearing a slim elegant suit with high heels, but in reality I am wearing loose-fit clothes to hide my body and comfortable loafers. It's been a while since I joined the company, so I can't remember what kind of company life I anticipated before. However, I enjoy working for the company and I want to show more of what I have. It's definitely a good place to work for, beyond my expectation.

What do you think is the best employee benefit offered by Hanwha Corporation/Global and why?

I think Sabbath, Father's Vacation, and Work-Family Balance Support (Infertility Treatment Leave, Family Care Leave, etc.) are the best benefits. I went on a trip to Europe with my parents during the sabbatical period after I got promoted to Manager position. I was able to spend quality times with my parents, and it was a great chance to refresh. And after getting married, I had IVF to treat infertility, and I was able to use my Infertility Treatment Leave, which allowed me to feel comfortable about it instead of being stressed about it (thanks to the Leave system, I have a beautiful baby girl now). With all the support from the company, I am able to concentrate on my work as I can provide better care for my family. I love Hanwha!

Can you advise the future coworkers on what to study and what skills to develop to do this job?

Basic mechanical engineering knowledge is required, and a good understanding of the project (quality, price, schedule, procedures, etc.) would be helpful. In addition, design codes and standards such as API and ASME are mostly written in English, and we often work with overseas Vendors, so strong language (English) skills will be very helpful. However, even if your skills are a little lacking, you can develop your skills while working. Mechanical design work requires collaboration with all divisions, including design and business management, quality control, and construction team. In addition, machine purchase is a very important task, so you need to communicate with business owners and vendors effectively. Therefore, it would be helpful if you can work to build a good communication skill in advance.
