Sukwang Kim, Assistant Manager

How do you spend your day?

Upon arriving at work, my first task is to check for any safety and health-related issues at each site and provide an update on safety and health. I maintain constant communication with site workers to have me in the loop and guide them on safety and health protocols and regulations. I also work on improving the ESH (Environment, Safety, and Health) management system and raising the company's awareness of ESH issues. Regular visits to each site for safety inspections are a key part of my role, in line with the annual ESH management plan. In the event of an incident, I provide assistance to ensure that relevant teams and the site can smoothly manage the situation and minimize the impact of the incident.

Could you Introduce your team and your job.

ESH Management Department handles legal matters related to environment, safety, and health in the context of business operations. Under the slogan 'Safe and Healthy Life for Anyone, Anywhere,' the ESH Operation Team manages and implements ESH policies. This includes assisting the management in fulfilling obligations according to safety and health-related laws and regulations, and creating a safe working environment through accident prevention measures.

Currently, my primary responsibility is the prevention of major industrial accidents. This involves supporting each site to ensure commitment to safety and health standards. In addition, I work on improving our safety and health policies, operating the ESH management committee, and identifying and addressing hazardous and risky factors.

Can you share your growth experience in our company?

The ESH management policy varies from company to company, making it challenging to establish a reasonable standard. As a result, we engage in numerous reviews and discussions to fine-tune our policy. In the field of health and safety management, there's a saying: 'The more you know, the more you see; the more you practice, the safer your workplace becomes.' As with this saying, I find that I'm growing when the improvements I observe in the company's health and safety practices as more experience I gain in this field.

Explain the most fulfilled experience at work.

Every moment in this job feels rewarding, whether I successfully revise an unreasonable health and safety rule, complete a challenging inspection, or see a construction project completes without any safety issues. However, the greatest reward comes from identifying and eliminating hazardous and risky factors that could potentially lead to a deadly accident.

Why did you choose Hanwha Corporation/Global?

I believed that I could grow alongside the company, which is always striving to move forward and lead in innovation. I wanted to be part of this dynamic organization to find inspiration. Especially in the ESH field, which is sensitive to changes in regulations, I knew I would constantly encounter new experiences and challenges and I chose to work for Hanwha because I was eager to develop my skills and passion in such an environment. Looking back, I'm confident that my decision was right.

What boosts you when you're exhausted by work?

The absence of feedback, support from colleagues, and autonomy are three major factors that can lead to work fatigue. While there are many ways to address these negative aspects, I find that having tea time with my colleagues is the most effective solution. It's often said that building resilience is crucial. Just like taking a break during a workout, I recharge and refresh by spending tea time with my colleagues.

What's your personal career goal?

I believe my mission as a safety manager is to ensure that all employees return home safely every day after work. To successfully accomplish this mission, I aim to be an all-around player. This means possessing a wide range of abilities including capacity, change agility, a collaborative attitude, compassion, decision-making skills, and creativity to truly make a difference.

Can you advise young talnets on what kind of studies or capabilities they should develop to do this job?

An ESH manager acts as a consultant to production line supervisors, requiring a thorough understanding of the production process and its integration with safety management. Additionally, the ESH field is constantly evolving, which means you need proactive efforts to stay ahead of changes in laws and regulations and advancements in industrial technology. Beyond this, an ESH manager guides the management towards making informed decisions, possessing the courage to speak out about site problems and persuading them to take necessary actions.
