Sukhun Cho, Senior Manager

How do you spend your day?

My workday starts with reserving a seat for the day using the mobile seat reservation system on my way to work. Although I don't have a fixed routine, my work typically begins and ends with reporting. In the preparation stage, I gather as much data as possible to support my report. Since most of my reporting focuses on the company's business issues, I often request materials from other business departments and hold meetings when I have questions. Once I finish drafting a report, I share it internally to receive feedback and improve any inefficient content. This reporting process is what I spend most of my time on. It might sound mundane, but it's quite intriguing as new report topics arise every day. In my personal life, I am allowed one free evening per week to socialize, perhaps over drinks or fine cuisine, but I make sure to spend quality time with my family, often enjoying small parties together.

Could you introduce your team and your job?

Corporate Strategy & Planning Department is responsible for setting the company's strategy and creating budget and operational plans. My role is in the strategy part. To put it simply, this part envisions the future of the company's business. We establish the direction for our company, preparing for the next 5 to 10 years. This involves evaluating new projects and investments, and assessing how much return they might generate. Everything we do is quantified. I think the best aspect of my work is that I can envision the company's future at the forefront.

Once strategies and objectives are set, we establish and manage the Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), which are the standards used to evaluate the company's annual performance. As the results of the KPIs are directly linked to employee incentives, I focus intensely on this aspect of my work.

Additionally, I handle other tasks such as reviewing new business project and organizing strategy meetings. These responsibilities have become valuable opportunities to deepen my understanding of the company's operations.

What do you think about the culture or atmosphere of your team?

Since the strategy part is made up of a few people, we have clear roles and responsibilities devided for each member. So, we independently work rather than cooperate, which makes us more responsible for our own tasks, but we regularly share what we're working on and give fresh ideas for each other's work.
Because our work requires a lot of cooperation with other departments, there are many chances to make bonds with people by talking and working together.

When have you felt fulfilled the most working in our company?

The 300-billion-won nitric acid plant currently under construction in Yeosu is the most memorable project I've worked on. It was the first CapEx project to be realized among many that I was involved in. Having seen numerous projects reviewed and ultimately fail, I jumped in this project with little expectation of its realization and no knowledge of nitric acid. However, over the course of six months working with experts from various fields, I learned a great deal about new investment projects, including setting up a business plan and conducting feasibility studies. Witnessing the investment receive final approval and seeing the planned work come to fruition was both exciting and immensely rewarding.

How do you see yourself before and after joining our company? What has remained the same and what has changed?

Before joining the company, I must admit, I had no clear vision for my career. My initial thought was simply to aim for the best company among those willing to hire me. In the early days, work was primarily a means of earning an income, which allowed me to do what I love. However, 16 years later, for reasons I can't fully explain, I find myself more attached to my work and now possess a clear career goal. Perhaps this change is partly because work remains a valuable means to meet my needs, but I prefer to believe it's due to the wonderful people I've met and the experiences that have enriched me personally.

What do you think is the best benefit of Hanwha Corporation/Global and why?

The sabbatical leave was the best employee benefit for me. It offered a month-long break from work, a luxury that many Korean workers find hard to come by. Being an extreme 'P' personality type, I didn't start my sabbatical with any grand plans. In the first week, I simply indulged in my favorite activities, like watching movies with a beer in hand. Afterward, I began to check off items from my bucket list, which I had only vaguely outlined in my mind. This included enjoying wine on a mountaintop overlooking the Blue House, going on a father-son trip, and creating a perfect day for my dog. I also set a day aside to reunite with my uncle who had adored me as a child. I introduced him to my child, who looks just like me. Sadly, my uncle passed away the following year, but I am grateful that I had the chance to see him before he passed. This experience is one of the reasons why I cherish the sabbatical leave as a treasured memory.

What's your personal career goal?

As a mechanical engineering graduate, I began my career as an engineer, which meant being away from my spouse. After eight years, I requested a transfer to headquarters to live with my wife. Prior to this, I was involved in business development and sales. Thankfully, my current position is a great fit for me. Therefore, my goal is to further develop the skills and capabilities necessary for excelling in my job.

Can you advise prospective new hires about what kind of knowledge and skills are required to do this job?

This job demands extensive interaction with individuals from various fields for reviewing new business items, so it's well-suited for those who love exploring new areas and have an outgoing personality that thrives on socializing.
In terms of report writing, the emphasis should be on brevity and simplicity, rather than overloading the report with excessive information to make the reports more readable.
It would be beneficial to study and develop financial skills, including cost-benefit analysis, M&A, and business valuation for joint ventures.
