Gunhyung Lee, Manager

How do you spend your day?

My work starts at 8 a.m. and finishes at 5:30 p.m. In business development, there's extensive communication and collaboration, not only with my team but also with relevant teams, clients, consultants, and counterparts. Occasionally, I need to adjust my schedule due to numerous meetings with global companies and experts.

Could you introduce your team and your job?

Our team is focused on developing the specialty chemicals business for the biohealth, pharmaceutical, and personal care sectors. This requires continuous collaboration with business planning, R&D, engineering, and marketing divisions, which is why it's crucial for me to understand each department's role. In terms of market development, I am responsible for establishing market entry and sales strategies. This involves identifying the needs of both domestic and global clients, creating business partnership models, and conducting pre-marketing activities. The insights gained from these efforts inform our decisions on product specifications, production volumes, and pricing strategies.

What do you think about the culture or atmosphere of your team?

Our team boasts a unique blend of experienced employees joined from other companies and entry-level hires, more so than other teams. While this might seem chaotic or challenging for team building, it's actually not the case. Business development thrives on fresh ideas to address the continuous stream of challenges. Essentially, we need to respond quickly to changes and issues, seeking the most efficient solutions. Brainstorming with team members from diverse backgrounds and perspectives often leads to excellent ideas. That's why we prefer to work with employees with different backgrounds.

When have you felt fulfilled the most working in our company?

When developing a business, you can either scale up an existing operation or venture into a new area. If you choose the latter, the first step is building a network to source talent and gather information. Initially, getting even a response to cold emails sent to potential clients was challenging, especially without any product samples to show. However, I didn't stop there. I collaborated with our company's global branches to reach out to prospective clients. This effort gradually built a network that eventually included market experts. These experts provided invaluable advice and assistance, significantly contributing to our business development.

How do you see yourself before and after joining our company? What has remained the same and what has changed?

Having had experience in business development before joining Hanwha Corporation/Global, I thought I'd quickly adapt to my role in the company. Contrary to my expectations, even with a basic understanding of the target item, thanks to my time in the petrochemical industry, I realized the need for further study and the development of a network and information base. So, I've been actively meeting a lot of people to gather data and resources. This process has been really fulfilling, as all these efforts are contributing to building my career in business development.

What do you think is the best benefit of Hanwha Corporation/Global and why?

I believe the greatest benefit of our company is its respect for employee autonomy. Hanwha Corporation/Global offers excellent flexible seating and working hours. You can tailor your work schedule to suit your convenience, which leads to improved work efficiency and better time management.

What's your personal career goal?

In the short term, I am dedicated to successfully developing this new item into a commercial product using our proprietary technology, with the goal of transforming our team into another business department in Hanwha Corporation/Global. For the long term, my aim is to expand our biohealth product portfolio, positioning it as a major revenue stream for the company.

Can you advise prospective new hires about what kind of knowledge and skills are required to do this job?

Business development involves communicating with numerous people both domestically and internationally, who come from diverse backgrounds. Therefore, strong communication skills and proficiency in foreign languages will be vital foundations for building a wide range of experiences and networks.
